After putting up a valiant comeback effort to rally from two goals down on Sunday against Delaware, the UNC field hockey team came up just short as the Blue Hens added a late score to win the NCAA Championship by a score of 3-2.
Delaware (23-2) ended the Tar Heels’ hopes of winning back-to-back national titles in the sport for the first time since 1996 and 1997.
Lauren Moyer and Megan DuVernois each scored for UNC (20-6), but it would not be enough to help bring the trophy back to Chapel Hill.
Meanwhile, on the soccer pitch, both the Tar Heel men’s and women’s teams advanced in the NCAA Tournament with victories over Florida Gulf Coast and Clemson, respectively.
Tucker Hume’s diving header in extra time–a play that came during the 105th minute–helped send the men’s team to a 3-2 victory and into the Sweet 16.
It was Hume’s second goal of the game for the ninth-seeded Tar Heels, who outlasted a Florida Gulf Coast squad that entered the day having scored more goals than any other team in the nation.
Next week, head coach Carlos Somoano’s squad will face No. 8 Syracuse in a rematch of a scoreless draw played on Sep. 30.
On the women’s side of the action, Dorian Bailey’s 71st-minute goal proved to be the only score second-seeded UNC would need to beat No. 3 seed Clemson 1-0 at Fetzer Field.
Her shot from outside the box floated just over Clemson goalie Kailen Sheridan, and lifted the Tar Heels into the NCAA Quarterfinals–where they will meet top-seeded South Carolina.
