With tournament time in college soccer getting underway, both the UNC men’s and women’s teams are currently in a great position to challenge for championship glory.
Ranked No. 3 in the country, the Tar Heel men earned the top seed for the ACC Tournament after battling to a scoreless draw on the road–in a game that went to double overtime–against No. 12 Notre Dame this past weekend.
UNC–which has lost just twice all season on the men’s side–will take on the winner of Boston College and Virginia Tech in Sunday’s conference quarterfinal.
Not since 2011 has head coach Carlos Somoano’s team won the ACC Tournament, meaning this will be a perfect chance to show that this year’s group–ranked among the top teams in America all year long–is capable of doing something special.
The No. 11 Tar Heel women, meanwhile, got their postseason off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over No. 12 Virginia in their ACC Quarterfinal match on Sunday. Goals from Annie Kingman, Madison Schultz and Dorian Bailey proved to be more than enough to get the job done.
Head coach Anson Dorrance and company are now set to take on No. 5 Notre Dame in the semifinals on Friday.
Despite having won 22 of the 36 NCAA titles in their history, it’s been even longer since the UNC women have taken home the conference tournament trophy–last doing so in 2009. With wins in their last four outings, however, it appears the Tar Heels are on the right track.
