The Town of Carrboro’s living wage plan will be implemented beginning July 1.

The Orange County Living Wage, a non-profit organization, has recognized Carrboro and 64 other employers that have raised all employee wages to a living wage.

OCLW bases its wage standard on a living wage, a nationally accepted formula that determines how much money employees need to make in order to meet their basic needs.

The two-year certification will ensure that all 258 full-time and part-time Carrboro employees will be paid at least $12.75 per hour if their employers provide no health insurance benefits, or at least $11.25 per hour if the employer pays at least half of health insurance benefits.

The new plan will follow the previous two-year plan from Carrboro that is scheduled to bring full-time town employees to at least $14.98 per hour in July.

Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle says that, “by extending the living wage to part-time employees, the entire town will benefit.”

Carrboro joins Orange County, the Town of Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, and many other employers in being recognized by OCLW.

OCLW recognized employers have collectively raised annual wages in Orange County by $560,000 since the summer of last year.
