Hat tricks from Chloe Humphrey and Addison Pattillo helped lead UNC to a 14-11 win against Stanford in the NCAA quarterfinals at Dorrance Field Thursday night. The Tar Heels will now advance to the Final Four for the second consecutive season and 15th time overall.
UNC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a goal from Darcy Felter and two more from Eva Ingrilli inside the game’s first six minutes. The Tar Heels would not give that lead up the rest of the game, though they would never extend the lead to larger than four goals as the Cardinal hung tough.
UNC led 8-4 at halftime despite Humphrey being held scoreless. She finally found the back of the net in the opening minutes of the third quarter, scoring her 100th goal of the season to put the Tar Heels ahead 9-5. Humphrey’s second goal followed less than two minutes later, and she secured her hat trick late in the fourth quarter to restore Carolina’s four-goal advantage. Defensively, UNC limited the Cardinal to just 13 shots on target.
Thursday’s win is the third for the Tar Heels against Stanford this season, after beating the Cardinal in both the regular season and the ACC Tournament title game. UNC, the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, has now punched its ticket to the Final Four next weekend in Chicago. The Tar Heels will face No. 3 overall seed Maryland in the semifinals Friday, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s title game against either No. 1 overall seed Northwestern or No. 4 overall seed Johns Hopkins. Northwestern handed UNC its only loss of the season in Chapel Hill in March.
