UNC just beat the No. 2 out of Georgia Tech.

Owen Hull hit a second-inning grand slam to help spark the Diamond Heels to a 14-4 win against the second-ranked Yellow Jackets Saturday at Boshamer Stadium. The game ended after eight innings due to the 10-run rule.

“Just a team win, top to bottom,” head coach Scott Forbes said afterward. “I didn’t point anybody out in the locker room. I thought we had great at-bats collectively throughout the order.”

Hull finished his day with six runs batted in, with an RBI single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the fourth adding to his tally. The grand slam in the second inning came after Lee Sowers, Jake Schaffner and Gavin Gallaher each drew walks. Hull stepped to the plate with two outs and blasted the first pitch he saw 417 feet over the right-center field wall.

“It felt smooth as butter,” Hull said of the grand slam. “I got a pitch, home run pitch, and I took a swing, and it went four.”

“He had to make some changes,” Forbes said of Hull. “He fought those changes, but then he started failing and he was more open to them. He’s ultra-competitive. He’s growing in his maturity. When he gets in the box, he knows how talented he is. And he’s just gotten better and better and better.”

Carolina scored three runs in the first, four in the second, three in the fourth, one in the seventh and three in the eighth on its way to the win. Macon Winslow and Cooper Nicholson also went deep for Carolina, marking the first time this season UNC has hit three home runs in consecutive games. Carolina hitters drew 12 total walks, including one to Carter French with the bases loaded which drove in the game-ending run. Schaffner alone accounted for four walks.

On the mound, Ryan Lynch earned the win with 4.2 innings pitched while allowing three runs and striking out two Yellow Jackets. Walker McDuffie tossed three innings of one-hit relief before Matthew Matthijs recorded the final in the top of the eighth inning. It ended up being the final out recorded by Carolina pitching on the day.

UNC’s 14 runs are tied for the most allowed by Georgia Tech pitching all season. This weekend also marks the first series loss for the Yellow Jackets this year, and the first time they’ve lost consecutive games since March 17.

Saturday’s win improves UNC to 33-6-1 this season and 15-5 in ACC play, tied with Georgia Tech atop the standings. Carolina will go for a series sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
