UNC Lacrosse: Men, Women Both Dominate in Home Wins

The UNC men’s and women’s lacrosse teams each picked up comfortable home wins Saturday, with the top-ranked women defeating Pitt 19-3 and the No. 5 men defeating Brown 19-7.

The women were up first Saturday, and they quickly took control with two goals in the opening two minutes. The first half was all Tar Heels, with Eliza Osburn and Chloe Humphrey each scoring hat tricks and leading UNC to a 13-0 lead at halftime. Carolina led 15-0 midway through the third quarter before Pitt finally scored its first goal.

As a team, UNC outshot the Panthers 27-0 in the first half and 40-7 overall. Humphrey outshot the entire Pitt team by herself with 13 attempts, and Carolina’s star attacker finished with five goals and two assists. It’s the 25th time in 29 career games Humphrey has scored at least three goals. She’s scored at least five in each of her last five games. Addison Pattillo and Kiley Mottice also scored hat tricks for UNC.

The Tar Heel women are now 7-0 overall this season and 5-0 in ACC play. They have won 29 games in a row and will put that streak on the line when they visit Cal in Berkeley Thursday at 7 p.m.

In the men’s game later that afternoon, the Tar Heels found themselves in a hole early after Brown scored three goals in the game’s first 4:32. UNC was down 3-0 in a flash.

But just as quickly, Carolina punched back with goals from Luke Bair, Brevin Wilson and Dominic Pietramala in the final minutes of the first quarter, taking a 4-3 lead into the second. Wilson’s tying goal and Pietramala’s go-ahead goal came in a span of just 35 seconds.

The UNC scoring run continued well into the second quarter, with a James Matan goal at the 4:54 mark giving the Tar Heels an 8-3 lead. Another long run in the third quarter, in which Carolina scored six goals in less than six minutes, increased the advantage to 16-5 entering the game’s final 10 minutes. UNC ended up outscoring Brown 19-4 after going down 3-0 early.

Pietramala and Bair both scored hat tricks, while Duffy finished with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. UNC outshot Brown 61-24 and dominated face-offs, winning 25 of 30.

Carolina is now 6-1 on the season and 5-0 at Dorrance Field. Up next, UNC will travel to Charlotte to face No. 14 Penn State in The Crown Lacrosse Classic Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
