The UNC women’s tennis team notched a pair of high-quality wins during a snowy weekend in North Carolina, beating No. 9 NC State in Cary Friday and then returning to the Chewning Tennis Center to beat No. 1 Georgia Sunday.
Against the Wolfpack Friday, the Tar Heels won the match 4-3 despite falling in an early hole after losing the doubles point. In singles, freshman Anna Frey evened the match with a win on No. 6 court, and teammates Oby Kajuru and Tatum Evans secured wins on Nos. 2 and 3. With NC State winning on the other two singles courts, the match came down to reigning NCAA singles champion Reese Brantmeier on No. 1. Brantmeier won the first set 6-4 against NC State’s Gabriella Broadfoot, but dropped the second set in a tiebreaker to force a decisive third. Brantmeier came through in the decider, winning 6-4 to seal the match for Carolina. It’s UNC’s fifth consecutive win against the Wolfpack.
Georgia’s visit to Chapel Hill Sunday was a rematch of the 2025 NCAA semifinals, won by the Bulldogs on their way to the national title. Brantmeier was forced to sit that match out due to an injury, but she made good on her second chance Sunday. Brantmeier and partner Alanis Hamilton won their doubles match 6-3 to help the Tar Heels clinch the doubles point, and Brantmeier kept the momentum going in singles with a straight sets win on No. 1 court.
Elsewhere, Frey won in straight sets on No. 5 court, Evans won in three sets on No. 3 and Hamilton rebounded from a 1-6 first set to win her match on No. 4. The Tar Heels won four of the six singles matches to earn the 5-2 win, marking the fourth straight year they’ve beaten Georgia in the regular season.
UNC, currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, is off to a 7-0 start in the spring season. In addition to the wins against the Wolfpack and Bulldogs, the Tar Heels have also beaten No. 14 Virginia. Up next for the team is the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Illinois, which begins Friday, Feb. 6 and runs through Monday, Feb. 9. UNC has won the indoor title seven times, most recently in 2023.
