UNC Volleyball Debuts New Court at Carmichael Arena

The UNC volleyball program revealed a new sport-specific, Taraflex court at Carmichael Arena earlier this week. Previously, the Tar Heels had played on a dual-use court shared with the women’s basketball program.

Taraflex, described as “the first choice for volleyball flooring,” provides the courts for high-level volleyball matches across the country, including the NCAA Championship. The installation of the new court in Carmichael marks the first time the UNC program will have played home matches on a volleyball-specific surface in head coach Mike Schall’s three-year tenure.

“The new Taraflex court is a big deal for our program,” Schall told Chapelboro. “It enhances our student-athlete experience by giving them a safer surface to play on and gives Carmichael Arena even more of a volleyball feel to it. We are beyond grateful for the support that we have to get something like this done.”

On the heels of a successful 2024 season which saw the program make its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2021 and win an NCAA Tournament match for the first time since 2016, Schall’s Tar Heels are off to a hot start in 2025. UNC is currently 13-2 overall, 6-0 in ACC play and has won seven consecutive matches. Among Carolina’s 13 wins is a 3-0 sweep of then-No. 11 Florida in Chapel Hill, the highest-ranked win in Schall’s tenure. UNC is 8-1 at home this season. Its current rank of No. 21 in the latest AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) poll is its highest of the season.

The Tar Heels are in the midst of a five-match road trip and will visit Boston College Friday night at 7 p.m. before playing at Syracuse Sunday at 2 p.m. The team’s next home match, which will mark the court’s competitive debut, will come against Notre Dame on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m.
