The UNC women’s lacrosse team finished off a perfect season by beating No. 3 Northwestern 12-8 to win its fourth national championship this past weekend. It’s UNC’s second perfect season in the last four years.
The 22-0 overall record alone is impressive. But there are several other statistics which speak to just how dominant the Tar Heels were this spring. Take a look:
3
Incredibly, UNC trailed in the second half in only three of its 22 contests this season, and didn’t do so once in four NCAA Tournament games. The largest deficit the team faced in any game, regardless of time? A 4-0 hole against then-No. 1 Boston College in Chapel Hill in April. UNC went on to win that game, 12-11.
6.86
Head coach Jenny Levy built her team on defense, and the Tar Heels’ scoring defense was by far the best in the country in 2025. UNC’s 6.86 goals allowed per game were nearly a full goal better than second place (Boston College at 7.73). Having the highest-scoring offense in the nation (17.45 goals per game) didn’t hurt either.
7
Carolina reached the 20-goal plateau seven times during the season after doing so only once in 2024. Their highest-scoring effort? A 23-1 blowout against Liberty which both tied a school record for fewest goals allowed in a game and fell one goal short of the record for most goals scored in a game.
15
Of the Tar Heels’ 22 wins, 15 of them came against ranked opponents. That includes six of UNC’s seven postseason games (two in the ACC Tournament and four in the NCAA Tournament). Of those 15 ranked wins, seven were decided by 10 or more goals, including a 20-4 destruction of No. 4 Florida in the national semifinals.
90
Redshirt freshman Chloe Humphrey, who was the top recruit in the Class of 2023 before an injury forced her to sit out last season, made her collegiate debut worth the wait. Humphrey’s 90 goals set an all-time single-season record for a freshman. The next-closest teammate? Marissa White, with 49 goals. Humphrey was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Tournament.
121
Ashley Humphrey, Chloe’s older sister, set a UNC program record with 121 points this season. Her 90 assists matched Chloe’s 90 goals, while Ashley added 31 goals on just 52 shots. Her .596 shot percentage led all Tar Heels with at least 15 shots. In addition, Humphrey also set a new all-time NCAA record with 258, breaking the old record of 246 set by Stony Brook’s Kylie Ohlmiller of Stony Brook. Humphrey nearly split her career assists evenly between her two schools: 130 came during her two seasons at Stanford, while 128 came during her two seasons at UNC.
+233
That was UNC’s scoring differential across 22 games, by far the highest of any team in the nation. In second place was Boston College at +205. Predictably, UNC’s per-game scoring differential of +10.59 was also best in the nation.
214-82
That was Carolina’s scoring differential in just the first halves of its games this season. That +132 margin would’ve ranked fifth among all teams in Division 1 this season. Across UNC’s four NCAA Tournament games, the Tar Heels outscored their opponents 35-13 in the first half.
