Both the writers and the coaches agree: the Diamond Heels are No. 1.
The D1Baseball.com Top 25 poll and the USA Today Coaches’ Poll ranked UNC No. 1 in the nation this week. Carolina is coming off an ACC Tournament championship in Durham last weekend.
Carolina currently sits at 42-12 and has won five of its last six games. Of those six contests, five came against either Florida State or Clemson, both of whom are ranked and will host regionals in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. This week marks the first time UNC has ever been ranked No. 1 in the D1Baseball.com poll, which began in 2014. You can view the full poll here. It’s also the first time UNC has been ranked No. 1 in any major poll since the 2013 season.
In the USA Today poll, UNC came in at No. 1 despite receiving the third-most first-place votes with six. No. 4 Vanderbilt received 10 first-place votes and No. 3 LSU received nine. You can check out that poll here.
The polls have no bearing on NCAA Tournament seeding, which is determined by the selection committee. Carolina received the No. 5 overall seed in the tournament this week, which reflects its RPI ranking of No. 6. Vanderbilt, Texas, Arkansas and Auburn received the No. 1-4 seeds. The full RPI rankings can be found here.
Carolina will be back in action when it begins its NCAA Tournament campaign Friday at 12 p.m. against Holy Cross in Chapel Hill. Nebraska and Oklahoma will play the second game of the regional following the conclusion of UNC’s game.
