UNC Lacrosse: Men Lose at No. 9 Army, Women Win at No. 20 Notre Dame

Both UNC lacrosse teams took to the road this weekend, with the No. 5 men’s team losing at No. 9 Army and the No. 2 women’s team winning at No. 20 Notre Dame.

The men couldn’t quite dig out of a late three-goal deficit in West Point Saturday, as the Tar Heels scored twice in the final minutes but lost 13-12. It’s Carolina’s second loss of the season.

The Tar Heels led 6-4 midway through the second quarter, but Army would outscore UNC 4-1 to end the second quarter – including a go-ahead goal with two seconds left in the period – to take an 8-7 lead into halftime. The Black Knights’ momentum continued into the third quarter, as they took a 12-9 lead thanks to three straight goals in a span of less than two minutes.

Army’s lead stood at 13-10 with 12:24 remaining in the game before goals by Owen Duffy and Ryan Levy whittled the deficit back down to a single goal. UNC had the final 6:16 to try and find an equalizer, but a potential tying goal from Dominic Pietamala hit the goal post with 4:55 to go, and a rebound shot from Ty English was saved. Those would be UNC’s final two shots of the game.

Duffy and Pietramala each ended the day with hat tricks, with Levy and English both scored twice.

The loss drops UNC to 7-2 overall this season entering ACC play. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they host Virginia at Dorrance Field next Saturday at 4 p.m.

On the women’s side, the Tar Heels scored the final eight goals of the game to pull away from the Fighting Irish in South Bend Sunday and win 14-3. The game was stopped early in the fourth quarter due to inclement weather.

The Humphrey sisters scored more than half of UNC’s goals, with Chloe Humphrey finding the back of the net six times by herself. Ashley and Nicole Humphrey each scored once, with Ashley adding a team-high four assists. Four of Chloe’s goals came in Carolina’s 6-0 run to end the game, and each of the team’s final three goals came from one of the three sisters: Ashley, Nicole and Chloe all scored in a span of 3:30 midway through the third quarter. Marissa White and Olivia Vergano each scored twice.

UNC is now 11-0 on the season, having won six games in true road environments – the last two of which have come against ranked opponents. Sunday’s win was the eighth time the Tar Heels have won by at least 10 goals and the 10th time UNC has held an opponent to fewer than 10 goals.

Carolina will put that undefeated record to the test when it hosts No. 1 Boston College at Dorrance Field next Saturday at 11 a.m. The Eagles are the defending national champions.
