Carolina shot 55.2 percent as a team and knocked down 10 three-pointers to beat Florida State 96-85 in Tallahassee Monday night. It’s the team’s fourth straight win, which ties a season high.

UNC was equally efficient on offense in both halves, shooting 17-31 (54.8 percent) in the first and 15-27 (55.6 percent) in the second. The hot shooting was needed, as the Seminoles shot a red-hot 15-24 (62.5 percent) in the first half to keep pace. Florida State led for much of the opening 20 minutes, going in front by as many as four points on multiple occasions. But the Tar Heels closed the half strong, with R.J. Davis, Ian Jackson and Jalen Washington each knocking down threes to give UNC a 49-43 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Carolina held off multiple Seminole surges; after the UNC lead grew to as large as 14 points, it shrunk to as little as six. Florida State never got closer than that, as UNC used a 12-2 run in the late stages of the half to take its largest lead of the night at 87-71.

Florida State finished the evening shooting 27-50 (54 percent) and made 21 free throws. The Seminoles also shot 10-20 on threes; Florida State came into the game shooting just 31.1 percent (322nd in Division 1) on threes. Jamir Watkins led the Seminoles with 26 points.

Davis paced the Tar Heels with 20 points, and in the process passed Wake Forest’s Dickie Hemric to move into third place on the ACC’s all-time scoring list. Seth Trimble added 17, while Jae’Lyn Withers (11), Elliot Cadeau (10), Ven-Allen Lubin (10) and Jalen Washington (10) each also reached double figures. Lubin grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to help Carolina dominate the glass: UNC outrebounded Florida State 35-21 and held a commanding 24-6 edge in second-chance points. Points in the paint also favored UNC by a 42-24 margin.

Carolina still has not lost to Florida State in head coach Hubert Davis’ four seasons with the Tar Heels, having won all six meetings.

The win improves UNC to 18-11 overall and 11-6 in ACC play. The Tar Heels will be back in action when they host Miami at the Smith Center Saturday at 12 p.m.
