Police: Trio of Suspects At Large After Shooting at State Trooper in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill Police and North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigators are searching for and working to identify suspects after an overnight chase that included gunfire within an apartment community.

The state highway patrol shared that a trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop around 2:30 a.m. on Interstate 40 near mile marker 266 on a vehicle traveling 113 mph in a a 65-mph zone. During the pursuit, which continued because the driver did not stop for the trooper’s lights and siren, it was determined the vehicle was stolen.

Highway Patrol said as the vehicle entered the town limits of Chapel Hill and navigated into the Timber Hollow Apartment Homes community, at least one occupant began shooting a gun at the pursuing trooper — which struck several parked cars at the apartment complex, which is off Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Shortly after, according to both the state highway patrol and Chapel Hill Police, three suspects wearing ski masks left the vehicle at the dead end of Mendel Drive in the apartment community and ran away. As of Saturday morning, the trio have not yet been identified or caught, and the investigation is ongoing.

Despite the gunfire striking several other vehicles, both law enforcement agencies said there are no reports of injuries from the incident.

The investigation is ongoing between Chapel Hill Police and the NC State Bureau of Investigation, with law enforcement offering a $2,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to an arrest in the case.
