Carolina couldn’t overcome a 2-0 second-half deficit against No. 1 Duke at Dorrance Field on Thursday night, as the Tar Heels fell 3-2 to the Blue Devils in the regular-season finale.

Olivia Thomas and Kate Faasse each scored for Carolina, with Thomas’ goal in the 55th minute cutting the deficit to 2-1 and Faasse’s coming in the 88th minute to make the score 3-2. But it was too little, too late; the Tar Heels wouldn’t get off another shot in the match’s final minutes.

Duke’s Hannah Bebar accounted for the first two of the Blue Devils’ goals, including a penalty kick in the 50th minute. Overall, Carolina held a slim 12-10 advantage in total shots, though Duke totaled six shots on target compared to the Tar Heels’ five. The Blue Devils also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

The loss drops UNC to 14-4 overall and 7-3 in league play at the conclusion of the regular-season schedule. It’s also Carolina’s second to Duke this season, second consecutive loss overall and third in its last four matches after beginning the season 13-1. The Tar Heels will be the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament and host No. 5 Virginia Tech at Dorrance Field in the event’s opening round on Sunday at 6 p.m.
