The Diamond Heels rebounded from two tough losses at Miami over the weekend to blow out the Hurricanes in the series finale on Sunday. Carolina earned the victory via the 10-Run Rule, winning 18-6 after seven innings.
Carolina lost via that same rule in the opener on Friday night, as the Hurricanes ran roughshod over starter Folger Boaz and the rest of the UNC pitching staff. Miami scored two runs in the first, three in the second, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and four more in the sixth on their way to a 14-1 win after seven innings.
UNC’s Jason DeCaro followed up that dud with a masterpiece on Saturday night, holding Miami scoreless through the first six innings. Carolina took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but DeCaro’s first mistake got sent over the center field fence for a game-tying solo home run. Dalton Pence entered the game and worked his way out of a jam, but Matt Poston gave up a walk-off home run to the first batter in the bottom of the ninth.
Carolina took out its frustrations on Sunday, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and keeping its foot on the gas. The Diamond Heels hit eight home runs, including two off the bat of Casey Cook in the sixth and seventh innings. Gavin Gallaher, batting leadoff, recorded four hits, drove in a team-high six RBIs and scored two runs himself. Oddly enough, star Vance Honeycutt was the only Carolina batter not to record a hit, though the MLB prospect did walk and score a run in the third inning. In total, UNC recorded 17 hits. Its seven home runs are the most in a single game since 2013.
After the weekend, Carolina sits at 17-4 overall and 4-2 in ACC play. The Diamond Heels will return to Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday evening to host UNC-Wilmington at 6 p.m. and will host Georgia Tech for an ACC series over the weekend.
