As UNC men’s basketball continues to see major change to its roster this offseason, high school commit Elliot Cadeau will join its ranks early.
InsideCarolina and ESPN each reported Tuesday that Cadeau, a high school junior, is set to reclassify and join the program this summer by graduating early. Cadeau later confirmed the news with posts on social media of him in a Carolina jersey.
The five-star recruit will arrive in Chapel Hill to enroll in early June, take part in offseason workouts, and be on the Tar Heels’ team for the 2023-24 season. As a recruit, 247Sports listed Cadeau as the No. 8 player in the 2024 class and the No. 1 point guard.
Cadeau will look to make the jump to college basketball after success at many under-18 levels. This past year, the guard lead Missouri’s Link Academy to a championship at the 2023 Geico Nationals tournament and Team Sweden to a title at the FIBA U18 European Championship for Division 2. In recent weeks, Cadeau has stood out during Nike EBYL play, which is one of the most competitive travel-ball circuits in the country.
Cadeau, listed as 6-foot-1 and weighing 165 pounds, is known for his ball distribution and shooting abilities. The Oradell, NJ, native committed to UNC in December 2022, following a visit to Chapel Hill during the “Live Action with Carolina Basketball” event to start the 2022-23 season. He’s the second high school recruit to reclassify and join the Tar Heels program earlier than expected — following Will Shaver, who did so last season.
Shaver is among nine departures from UNC men’s basketball this year, after the preseason No. 1 team fell short of making the NCAA Tournament. Cadeau will join a freshman class of combo guard Simeon Wilcher and forward Zayden High. Carolina also has a robust incoming transfer class, which includes Jae’Lyn Withers, Cormac Ryan, Harrison Ingram and Paxson Wojcik. UNC head coach Hubert Davis has two additional scholarship spots available for the 2023-24 year if Cadeau successfully reclassifies and joins the team. More information on each of the transfers coming in can be found here, while a list of UNC men’s basketball departures can be found here.
