A plane crash in northern Orange County on Sunday morning killed one person, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. The crash occurred near North Carolina Highway 157 and Breeze Road, west of the town of Rougemont and the Orange County Speedway.

Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood told the News & Observer when deputies and fire officials arrived on the scene, they found the plane engulfed in flames. One person — the only person in the aircraft, according to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson — was found dead.

The plane was a single-engine Beechcraft 35, and according to Blackwood it took off from Raleigh-Durham International Airport before crashing at approximately 12:15 p.m. A witness reported the plane appeared to be in distress before it crashed.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating.
