Six Tar Heels from the men’s and women’s basketball teams were named to the 2022-23 All-ACC Academic teams. R.J. Davis and Tyler Nickel were the honorees from the men’s team, while Alyssa Ustby, Kennedy Todd-Williams, Paulina Paris and Alexandra Zelaya from the women’s team were honored.

Davis is currently majoring in exercise and sport science at UNC, while Nickel was majoring in communication studies before he transferred. Paris and Todd-Williams (who has also since transferred) are exercise and sport science majors, Ustby is majoring in communication studies and Zelaya is majoring in environmental science.

Davis averaged 16.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game for the Tar Heels while shooting a career-best 88.1 percent from the free throw line. He is one of two Carolina starters, along with fifth-year center Armando Bacot, to confirm they will return to Chapel Hill for next season.

Ustby was named first team All-ACC for her efforts in 2022-23 and finished as Carolina’s leading rebounder, despite missing several games with a lower-body injury. Paris appeared in all 33 games for the Tar Heels and started four, averaging 6.3 points per game as the team’s only true freshman. Zelaya started three games and averaged 1.4 points per game.

Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team’s games.
