The Town of Chapel Hill is providing residents the opportunity to give feedback and guide its search for the next Chapel Hill Police Chief.
After Chief Chris Blue announced his intention to retire, the police department started seeking a replacement. To help, the town government recently released a short survey where residents can share their thoughts regarding what they believe the police chief’s priorities should be. Community members can also detail major opportunities and challenges they believe face both the Chapel Hill Police Department and a new police chief, as well as list the most important leadership qualities for the next chief of police.
Residents should complete the form by September 30 to ensure their thoughts are considered in the hiring process.
When the town ultimately posts the job advertisement for the new police chief, the local government says it will be open for 30 days, followed by an extensive review process. After the review process, Town Manager Maurice Jones will select a candidate from the finalists.
Blue will retire on December 31 of this year, and the town hopes to have a new chief in place before January 1, 2023.
Blue was appointed as police chief in 2010, where he led the department’s response to several tragic murders in the community, managed three UNC men’s basketball Final Four appearances and called for increased transparency surrounding Chapel Hill’s policing efforts.
“It has truly been an honor to serve as a police officer in my hometown for all these years and I still love every minute of it. But, it is time for me to try other things and make space for the next leader of this outstanding organization,” Blue said in a press release with the retirement announcement. “They will be taking over the most progressive and innovative law enforcement agency in this state and I’m excited to see what’s next for the incredible team at CHPD.”
