The installation of fiber optic lines along state roads and town streets will begin in Hillsborough next week, Orange County announced Monday. The goal of the project is to connect county government facilities and install a backup internet connection in case of primary network failure.
“We’re connecting all of our county’s buildings,” Renee Price, chair of the Orange County Board of Commissioners, told 97.9 The Hill’s Andrew Stuckey on Wednesday. “We’ve got West Campus and North Campus and Central… so we’re trying to connect all of that together.”
The contractor, working on behalf of the county, has agreements with both the Town of Hillsborough and the state of North Carolina to meet standards to work within public rights of way, as well as compliance with noise ordinance.
The work itself will take place between 7 a.m. 8 p.m. on weekdays, though work could possibly be done outside this schedule on a case-by-case basis. The first stage of the project will begin on U.S. Highway 70 at the Bonnie B. Davis Environment and Agricultural Center on Monday, August 15. Work will proceed along a set route, which ends at the Orange County Main Library.

Door hangers will be placed on affected homes and businesses approximately one week prior to the start of work. The Town of Hillsborough estimates the project will be completed within six weeks. For more information about the project, click here.
