From national champion to world champion. Not a bad summer for UNC women’s lacrosse head coach Jenny Levy.
Levy led the USA Women’s Lacrosse team to its fourth consecutive world championship Saturday, beating Canada 11-8 in the gold medal game. Along with Levy, Team USA featured six Carolina alumnae, which is a third of its 18-woman roster.
The Americans went undefeated throughout the entire tournament, finishing with a spotless 8-0 record.
Marie McCool, who played for Carolina from 2015 through 2018 and won a national championship as a sophomore, posted her fifth hat trick of the tournament in the final. She finished the event with 20 goals and four assists and was named to the 2022 All-World Team. McCool now has two gold medals to her name, having won gold with Team USA in 2017 when she was still a UNC student.
Ally Mastroianni, fresh off finishing her Carolina career with a national championship, secured seven draw controls in the game to give her a team-high 38 for the tournament. Mastroianni and teammate Emma Trenchard were the youngest of the UNC alumnae on the team.
Emily Parros, who also finished her UNC career with a title in 2013, dished out an assist during the gold medal game and ended the tournament with seven points. Molly Hendrick, who won the 2016 title with McCool, finished with eight. In net, former Tar Heel and 2016 national champion Caylee Waters made 17 saves in six games.
“To see all of them today get this reward is amazing. It has been a true team from the get go,” said Levy. “We had all sorts of different adversities and challenges throughout this tournament with weather and delays, but I’m really happy for the players. They’re unbelievable role models and they’re just first class.”
And it wasn’t just Team USA; Carolina had its fingerprints all over the World Championship. UNC rising sophomore Brooklyn Walker-Welch played on the Canadian silver medalists, and rising senior Emily Nalls played for England. Nalls’ English side won the bronze with a triple-overtime win against Australia.
