While the team season for UNC women’s tennis might be over, Fiona Crawley is still representing Carolina in the individual NCAA singles tournament. And Crawley is doing it in style, as the sophomore secured a spot in the national semifinals Friday with a straight sets win over Pepperdine’s Lisa Zaar.
Crawley is the last male or female Tar Heel remaining in the singles or doubles tennis championships. Three Tar Heel women made the round of 16 on Wednesday, but both Elizabeth Scotty and Carson Tanguilig lost in three sets. Cameron Morra and Reilly Tran each also qualified, but both lost in the first round of the tournament.
Crawley’s road to Friday’s semifinals included wins over opponents from Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Texas. Crawley defeated the Longhorns’ Kylie Collins in straight sets in the round of 16, avenging a loss to Texas in the national semifinals of the team tournament last week. Texas went on to win its second consecutive national championship.
Crawley will face either Abigail Rencheli of NC State or Connie Ma of Stanford in the semifinals, which are being played in Champaign, IL. She is aiming to become UNC’s first individual singles champion since Jamie Loeb in 2015.
