Reggie Bullock has been making plays on the court for the Dallas Mavericks throughout this year’s NBA Playoffs, but it’s what the UNC basketball alumnus has been doing off the court that’s been getting attention. On Sunday, the NBA named Bullock the recipient of the 2022 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion Award.
Bullock has been a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ+ community since his sister, Mia Henderson, who was transgender, was murdered in 2014. Bullock has since partnered with multiple ally organizations in and around Dallas, including the Muhlashia Booker Foundation, which dedicates itself to providing advocacy and support for transgender women.
Bullock has also participated in events such as the New York City Pride March and created his own organization, RemarkaBULL, which “focuses on LGBTQ+ support and the nonviolence movement.”
“We are all one, and I believe love lies in everybody’s heart,” said Bullock. “It’s incredibly important to me as a cisgender athlete to stand in support of the trans and LGBTQ+ community.”
Bullock has also been outspoken against gun violence after another of his sisters, Keiosha Moore, was shot and killed in 2019.
“I wish things were different. I wish I still had my sisters here. But no matter what, nobody can ever take away the memories I have of the good times we had,” Bullock wrote in a piece for The Players’ Tribune in 2021. “The joy, the laughter. Those are mine.”
As a recipient of the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, Bullock will receive $100,000 to donate to a charity of his choosing. He is donating the money to Kinston Teens, an organization based in his native Kinston, N.C., “focused on community development and youth empowerment.”
