The Diamond Heels won again on Sunday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, taking two games of a three-game series with Duke to improve to 17-3 on the season and 5-1 in ACC play.
Connor Bovair got the start on the mound and was masterful in his six innings of work. Bovair held the Blue Devils to just two hits and one unearned run, taking a no-hitter into the fifth and picking up his second win of the season in the process. The quality start dropped Bovair’s earned run average to 2.16 this season. Kyle Mott and Caden O’Brien sealed the game in the final three innings, with Mott tossing a massive strikeout with the bases loaded in the eighth and O’Brien slamming the door in the ninth for his fourth save.
At the plate, it was yet another productive day for freshman Vance Honeycutt, who opened the scoring with a home run over the Blue Monster in left field, then added an RBI double in the eighth inning. Honeycutt currently leads the team in both home runs (eight) and runs scored (26). Tomas Frick followed up Honeycutt’s blast in the third inning with a bloop single to score Angel Zarate. Zarate went 2-4 on the day, extending his hitting streak and on-base streak to 20 and 43 games, respectively.
Mac Horvath sent a solo shot of his own out of the DBAP in the sixth inning. Horvath was one of five Tar Heels to collect two hits on the day, and Carolina as a team ended up with 12.
At 17-3, UNC still has not lost a three-game series this season. The Tar Heels will briefly return home to Boshamer Stadium Tuesday night for a mid-week game with Appalachian State before hitting the road again for a weekend series at Miami.
