Some of the latest academic rankings saw UNC again land top honors within its region.

The Wall Street Journal/Times recently shared its regions list for the papers’ 2022 Higher Education College Rankings, with the Chapel Hill university once again being the top public school in the southeastern United States. In the initial publication of the rankings in September, UNC was revealed to be the 33rd best university in the country — maintaining its spot from the 2021 list.

In addition to being the top public school in the South Region, North Carolina is ranked third among all public schools.

Ranking, according to the Wall Street Journal/Times, is determined by 15 factors across four main categories: resources, engagement, outcomes and environment. According to UNC’s release about the rankings, its best score was in the outcomes category, which weighs institution’s graduation rates, reputation, graduate salaries and deb after graduation.

“Carolina is committed to serving our state and, as a result, the entire Southern region of the United States,” said UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz. “As the top-ranked public university in the South, we will continue to strive for excellence as we prepare our students to do great things. We have long aspired to be the leading global public research university in the nation, and our preeminence in these rankings will continue to attract the world’s best faculty, staff and students, along with the top national and international industry partners, to our region.”

Carolina is joined by its rival in the rankings as well: the 2022 rankings list Duke as the South region’s high-rated private school and fifth in the nationwide.
