The Chapel Hill Police Department is investigating a crash involving two pedestrians on a busy road on Friday night.
A release from the department said around 5:30 p.m., two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle. Both people sustained “serious injuries” and emergency services transported them to UNC Hospitals.
According to police, the driver in the incident remained at the scene.
Around 7 p.m., both intersections with Caswell Road along Estes Drive were closed as Chapel Hill Police investigated the crash.
Estes Drive is a popular road in Chapel Hill that is often used to travel between two of the town’s busiest roads: Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and East Franklin Street. The town government is preparing to build various improvements along Estes Drive in the coming year, including updated sidewalks and improved crosswalks for pedestrians.
Chapel Hill recently announced, however, that work on the Estes Drive Connectivity Project this winter would be delayed until the spring, citing the need to move a gas line.
As of Friday night, there are no further updates on the crash investigation, according to police.
