Friday afternoon’s release of students at Carrboro High was disrupted by a small fire in the building.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district alerted parents to emergency vehicles responding to the fire around 3 p.m. A release from the Town of Carrboro and the fire department said 19 firefighters, five engines and one ladder truck responded to the scene at Rock Haven Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a “light smoke” in the hallway around a bathroom. According to Saturday’s release, the firefighters entered the bathroom to discover the fire had been put out by the school’s sprinkler system and “was confined to a bathroom stall.”
No injuries to emergency responders, students or CHCCS were reported. The town government said on Saturday initial damage estimates to the building and property are around $5,000.
“I’m impressed with the quick thinking and actions of the high school staff and Carrboro police resource officer who ensured the students were evacuated in a calm and orderly manner,” Carrboro Fire Chief Dave Schmidt said in a statement. “Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the situation was resolved quickly.”
Carrboro Fire Department said the fire has been deemed “suspicious.” Officials will investigation the cause, with the Carrboro Police Department and Chapel Hill Fire Department assisting in the investigation.
