As the start of basketball season approaches, UNC has released its COVID guidelines for attendees at any winter sports event.

The guidelines largely resemble those for fall sports. As all winter sports are played indoors, masks will be required at any event in the Dean Smith Center, Carmichael Arena or any other indoor venue. Attendees must wear their masks at all times, except when eating or drinking. As with fall sports, vaccines are not required at this time to attend a winter sports event.

Full attendance will be allowed in all indoor venues. The only exception is Carmichael Arena’s configuration for women’s basketball games. For those events, the first two rows of seats behind the team benches will be blocked off.

Transactions such as ticket and concessions purchases will continue to be digital, and the Smith Center’s clear bag policy remains unchanged.

As of October 13, 93 percent of UNC students and 88 percent of employees have attested they are vaccinated. The CDC classifies Orange County’s transmission rate as “high,” with a 2.3 percent positivity rate. Hospitalizations around North Carolina are steadily decreasing, with Orange County seeing 246 hospitalizations per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks.
