UNC earned one of the higher spots in a recent ranking of universities across the globe.

The 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released each year by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, placed the Chapel Hill institution 29th in the world and 20th in the country. Additionally, the list ranks UNC seventh among public universities in the United States.

The placements mark an improvement for UNC compared to earlier versions of the rankings. In 2020, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy listed Carolina as 30th in the world and tied for 33rd in 2019. 2021’s list also marks UNC as the highest-rated school in North Carolina, with Duke University coming in at 32nd, North Carolina State University coming in between 201-300 and Wake Forest University coming in between 401-500.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities is comprised of university evaluations based on objective indicators. The number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers and the per capita academic performance of an institution are just a few of the ways universities are ranked. The first edition of these university rankings was published in 2003.

Academic subject rankings are also included in the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy’s newest list. This year, UNC earned top-20 positions for 11 different academic subject areas, particularly in the medical sciences field. The university placed second in dentistry and oral sciences, seventh in nursing and eighth in public health. Other subject areas recognized with top-20 rating are: pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, statistics, business administration, education, biological sciences, biomedical engineering, sociology, and computer science and engineering.

UNC Vice Provost for Global Affairs Barbara Stephenson shared her reaction to the ranking in a release from the university on Monday.

“I am delighted to see Carolina moving up a position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities,” said Stephenson, who is also UNC’s chief global officer. “We should all celebrate the exceptional work by faculty, students and staff to solidify the University’s position as a leading global public research institution.”

The top three university in the Academic Ranking of World Universities remain unchanged from the 2020 list. Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of Cambridge held the top three spots, respectively.
