The Town of Hillsborough is looking for an artist to complete a new mural on East King Street.
In partnership with the Hillsborough Tourism Development Authority, the Orange County Arts Commission is seeking a mural artist to design and install a mural on an exterior wall of the building at 109 East King Street.
The selection panel intends to choose an artist to create a mural that captures “the rich history of Hillsborough” as well as The News of Orange County – a local newspaper publication that has been in production since 1893, which is housed in the building.

“COVID-19 really put a damper on our ability to invite visitors to come and threatened the success of our small businesses,” said Hillsborough Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell. “The hope is that the mural gives folks another reason to come explore Hillsborough, do some shopping, and grab a bite or a pint.”
Based on past work samples, three finalists will be selected for the project. Each finalist will receive a $325 stipend to create a proposal and design for the final project.
Designs should contain interesting and relevant thematic elements relating to newspapers, publishing, and/or Hillsborough historic events.
A final artist and design will be chosen from the three finalists and the selected artist will work with the review committee to finalize the proposal.
The mural will then be reviewed by the Historic District Commission for a Certificate of Appropriateness before installation can commence. The Hillsborough Tourism Development Authority has authorized $6,000 for the installation of the mural, likely in September or October.
Muralist applications are due May 26. The project is open to all artists age 18 and over.
Interested artists can find the request for qualifications on the Orange County Arts Commission’s website.
