Much like its women’s counterparts did last weekend, the No. 2 ranked UNC men’s tennis team won the ITA National Indoor championship on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over No. 4 Baylor.
The Tar Heels (6-0) won the doubles point without much of a struggle, then received singles victories from the trio of Benjamin Sigouin (6-3, 7-5), William Blumberg (6-3, 7-6) and Brian Cernoch (7-6, 7-5) to clinch the title.
Baylor’s loss was the first the Bears have suffered this season, as they fall to 11-1.
As a result, UNC becomes just the second school all-time to win both the men’s and women’s ITA National Indoor championships in the same season–a feat also accomplished by Stanford back in 2000.
“These guys have been in so many big moments for us and done such incredible things,” head coach Sam Paul said. “I’m so happy for them that they now have a national championship.
“I think that’s one reason Will [Blumberg] came back,” he added. “He had many opportunities not to come back, and the same thing for all of these guys. For Will, Simon [Soendergaard], Josh [Peck] and everyone to commit to come back and be part of the experience again is amazing. It’s a different thing to coach fifth-year seniors, we’ve never done that before. I am so happy for them for everything they’ve given to this program.”
