UNC authorities are seeking the arrest of a suspect believed to have unlawfully entered the Campus Y building on campus and leaving anti-Semitic vandalism.

The university shared a message with the campus community on Monday, saying that the incident happened sometime from the weekend of January 23 and 24. The break-in and vandalism was reported to UNC Police, who have identified a suspect and issued two warrants for the person’s arrest.

According to the message, the individual entered the building and defaced several offices by leaving anti-Semitic symbols and writing a racial epithet on a whiteboard.

“The Campus Y has a long history on our campus and has been home for students, faculty, staff and community members to promote social justice for generations of Tar Heels,” said a message signed by Robert Blouin, the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, and Amy Johnson, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

“Hateful vandalism is not acceptable anywhere on our campus, but this breach of an established organization that promotes equality and justice is particularly egregious.”

The vandalized part of the Y also includes The Meantime Cafe – which said in its own statement that it will be closed for the rest of the week out of concern for it’s customers and baristas.

Campus Y is described as “the largest and most vibrant advocacy and public service student organization” at the university. The 32 student-led social justice committees operating at Campus Y “are dedicated to public health, human rights, youth development, environmental advocacy, education, poverty alleviation, and immigration policy.”
