UNC Police officers responded to an incident at the Adams School of Dentistry on Tuesday, taking one person into custody for a weapon violation.
According to an email from Dean Scott De Rossi to the dentistry school community Tuesday evening, a patient brought a concealed weapon into the clinical space of Tarrson Hall during the morning. The dean’s message said the firearm fell onto the floor during the patient’s procedure and did not discharge. Reports from the police department show John Olexa, a 75-year-old Pittsboro man, was charged with bringing a weapon onto school property.
“I write to assure you that there is no ongoing threat to our community,” said De Rossi. “I know seeing a firearm on site – or knowing one was on campus – is unsettling for many of you. Please know your safety is always the top priority of our school, of Carolina Dentistry and of our University.”
UNC Police alerted the community of the incident on Tuesday, tweeting why there was a police presence outside of Tarrson Hall.
Per North Carolina General Statute 14.269.2, it is a felony to possess or carry, whether openly or concealed, a firearm of any kind onto any university campus or into any university-owned and operated facility. UNC says such conduct from a student may also constitute a violation of the university’s Honor Code.
The statute says such a violation is punishable by a fine or imprisonment. Reports from UNC Police show Olexa is due in Orange County’s District Criminal Court Wednesday afternoon on his charge.
The UNC Police Department provides virtual training on how to respond to an active shooter or dangerous scenario. In addition to sharing that resource, De Rossi told the Adams School community Director of Student Wellness Kate Thieda could be contacted for an appointment to further discuss concern stemming from the incident.
