The Wegmans grocery store development in Chapel Hill saw some delays at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, which knocked the project off its projected fall 2020 opening.

On Monday, however, the popular store chain revealed a timeline for the location.

A release from Wegmans said the Chapel Hill store is on track to open in the “early spring” of 2021. In addition, the store will be hiring around 400 employees for the location over the next eight months. The store chain says full-time hiring for the Chapel Hill store is already underway.

The Chapel Hill location will become the third Wegmans in the state, following one opening in Raleigh last year and another in Cary this year. A Wake Forest Wegmans is also slated for opening in 2021, according to the grocery store’s release.

“I am so proud of everything our North Carolina store teams have accomplished over the past two years,” wrote Blaine Forkell, the division manager for Virginia and North Carolina. “The Raleigh and Cary communities have welcomed us with open arms, and we can’t wait to grow our footprint in the Raleigh-Durham area with our next two stores. We have met some great applicants and are looking to continue hiring people who share our love for food and commitment to incredible customer service.”

Beyond construction on the building itself, much work to prepare the surrounding area off Old Durham Road and U.S. 15-501 is being done in preparation for Wegmans’ opening. The Chapel Hill Town Council recently approved various traffic calming measures for the surrounding roads, which will add stop signs, crosswalks and No Through Truck Traffic signs. The state Department of Transportation also is installing sidewalks and a new water line along Old Durham Road for the development.
