During the Carrboro Town Council Meeting this past Tuesday, Mayor Lydia Lavelle declared May will be “Bike Month.”

Lavelle issued the proclamation as a way to raise awareness of the benefits of bicycling, especially during the current pandemic with people stuck in their homes for long periods of time.

She also revealed Carrboro will be updating its Comprehensive Bike Plan in an effort to make biking in the town safer, more accessible, more convenient and a more effective alternative to vehicular transportation.

The pandemic forced the town to cancel its traditional Bike Month festivities, but Lavelle’s proclamation urges residents to participate in a pair of new planned activities.

On Tuesday, May 5, she encourages Carrboro residents to decorate their sidewalks, windows or bikes with signs of encouragement to bike. The next day, Wednesday, May 6, she asks residents to ride their bikes with family and friends to their school or around their neighborhood and encourages them to ride their bikes or walk to look for chalk art or signs created by others.

To help bring the community together during this time, Lavelle also asked that residents use #BiketoSchoolDay when sharing photos or route locations on social media.
