Authorities Urge Caution on Roads Ahead of Winter Weather

Orange County is expected to receive between one and three inches of snow from Thursday afternoon to Friday morning.

Authorities are urging caution for residents and motorists who are traveling during this time.

“We do not get much snow and ice compared to other areas of the country; therefore, as a general rule, we are not experienced winter drivers,” Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood said. “Even those of us with experience are at increased risk because many of the people on the roads with us do not have that experience.

“Add to that, in a battle between ice and experience, the laws of physics favor the ice. In other words, we are all vulnerable and we all need to drive with extreme caution.”

The most important safety tips for driving in snow and on icy roads are to slow down, maintain a steady speed, and increase following distance. Sudden changes in speed can cause a skid, and this applies whether the vehicle accelerates quickly or attempts to stop suddenly.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also emphasized the need for caution.

“The state is getting ready, and everyone else should too,” said Cooper. “Don’t let the temperature right now fool you, because it’s going to get colder and this winter storm will affects most parts of North Carolina. Please pay close attention to your local forecast and be prepared.”
