Carrboro’s Board of Aldermen could soon go by a different name.

Carrboro Mayor Lydia Lavelle says one item the board will discuss at Tuesday night’s meeting is the possibility of changing the governing board’s name. The possibility of changing the name from Board of Aldermen has been discussed for several years. The Mayor says this may be the perfect time to finally do so.

“I think the time is right for us to have this discussion,” says Lavelle. “One reason is that over the course of the next year, we are going to be fleshing out our town code and making it gender neutral. The timing seems right to see if we want to change the name of our board to Board of Alders, or Town Council, or Board of Alderpeople, whatever.”

Carrboro’s Town Code states that the name can be changed to either Town Council or Board of Commissioners without any approval by the General Assembly but other name changes would have to be approved by state lawmakers through a local bill.

“We have a very cool board,” she says, “very forward-thinking in trying to figure out just what is the name we would want to change it to.”

Carrboro’s meeting Tuesday night is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Town Hall.
