Orange County is hosting an information session on the Northern County Campus Tuesday night ahead of receiving a report on the progress made on the project that will be home to, among other facilities, the Orange County Detention Center.
The county approved the purchase of approximately 21 acres of property in the Hillsborough Highway 70/Cornelius Street corridor earlier this year after the land was rezoned by the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners.
The county commissioners will receive an update on how the project is progressing on several fronts, including from architecture firms tasked with different portions of the project. Before that report in the board’s regular meeting, a public information session is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in room 240 of the Whitted Building in Hillsborough.
“County staff and the project construction manager will be available to answer questions and provide an update to interested residents,” officials said in a release.
Neighbors of the property voiced their concerns with the project to commissioners earlier this year and a petition was started urging the elected official to choose a new site. After county staff reviewed other options, it was recommended to the commissioners that the site was the best option.
The project timeline calls for input, site design and review to last through the end of this calendar year with construction expected to begin in the summer of 2019 before possible occupancy of the new facilities in 2021.
The campus will include several buildings outside of the detention center. An Environment and Agriculture Center and some county offices are also slated for the property.
Tonight’s Orange County Board of Commissioners meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Whitted Building in Hillsborough.
