Former UNC provost Jim Dean has been named the new president of the University of New Hampshire.
Dean announced the move on social media Wednesday morning saying, “Thanks to everyone at [Kenan-Flagler] and [UNC] who made our time here so wonderful.”
Dean has been at UNC since the late 1990s, moving from associate dean of the MBA Program to associate dean of Executive Development before serving as senior associate dean and, ultimately, dean of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School from 2008-2013.
Dean was named provost by former Chancellor Holden Thorp just before his resignation at the end of the 2012-2013 academic year and stayed on with the incoming Chancellor Carol Folt. Folt announced in August 2017 that Dean would be stepping down as provost and returning to a position in the business school.
Dean will be making the move from Chapel Hill to Durham, New Hampshire, to take over as the university’s twentieth president effective June 30, 2018. He is succeeding Mark Huddleston, who UNH officials say is retiring after 11 years in that role.
Folt Tweeted her congratulations to Dean on Wednesday afternoon.
