Approximately 15,000 costumed celebrators took to Franklin Street for Chapel Hill’s Homegrown Halloween on Tuesday night.
That number is continuing a trend of the event decreasing in size since peaking with an estimated crowd of 80,000 revelers in 2007. Concerted efforts by town staff have increased police presence and shortened the amount of time costume-clad partygoers can take to the street.
“We’re extremely thankful to Town staff, area partners, and you—the community—for making Homegrown Halloween a safe and happy night this year,” Chapel Hill Police chief and executive director for Community Safety Chris Blue said in a release.
No arrests were made Tuesday night related to the event, but there were three medical calls for service – two of which were alcohol-related, officials said.
Staff from various law enforcement departments are deployed across Franklin Street for the event as well as town staff from multiple departments and volunteers.
The thoroughfare was reopened by 11:30 Tuesday night after being cleaned by town crews.
