The fourth annual benefit concert for the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation is taking place this weekend at the Cat’s Cradle.
The foundation, named after Chapel Hill teenager Sophie Steiner who died of cancer in 2013, supports adolescent and young adult cancer patients and their families at UNC Hospitals.
Sophie’s parents Niklaus and Lucy Steiner founded Be Loud! Sophie in order to provide support for what Sophie found to be an underserved group of cancer patients: teenagers.
“We decided that we would honor Sophie’s life by honoring something that she cared deeply about, which was making sure that other teenagers with cancer were able to have a very supportive experience in the hospital,” said Lucy Steiner.
One of the people working to make Sophie’s vision a reality is the Adolescent and Young Adult Program director at UNC Lineberger and the NC Cancer Hospital Lauren Lux.
According to Lux, Cancer can come with an entirely different set of issues for teenagers and young adults.
“I work with patients at UNC who are 13 to 30, so both in pediatrics and in the adult world,” says Lux. “And I try to help them figure out, ‘How do I keep on being me, how do I keep on being a teenager and a young adult in the context of this illness?’”
Among the acts performing at the concert are Drivin’ N’ Cryin”, the Backsliders and local supergroup The Spressials.
The foundation has raised nearly $700,000 since it’s inception in 2014
