The Old Greensboro Road Bridge that passes over Phils Creek between Jones Ferry and Neville Road in Chapel Hill will be replaced with a new bridge.
The N.C. Department of Transportation Board of Transportation has awarded $984,000 for the project which will begin in October and is scheduled for final completion in March 2018.
“The work includes elevating the bridge by two feet and adding new bicycle lanes in each direction,” said Division 7 Board Member and Chairman Michael Fox. “This will increase safety by improving sight-distance as well as improve connectivity for drivers and bicycle riders in this community.”
“Cycling is extremely popular in this area, both for transportation and for recreation,” said North Carolina Bicycle Club president David Cole. “We are delighted that NCDOT recognizes the importance of prioritizing the safety of travelers using multiple modes of transportation.”
Dane Construction Inc. of Mooresville is the contractor for the project.
This project is one of the 16 highway and bridge project contracts recently awarded by the Department of Transportation.
All 16 projects are worth $204.5 million total, $13 million under original Department of Transportation estimates.
