Periods of heavy rain overnight into Tuesday morning have caused several closures and warnings around our community.
The Riverwalk and Gold Park – both located in Hillsborough – are closed until further notice due to the flooding, according to officials, adding “No one is allowed entry into these areas.”
Portions of both the greenway and park are underwater as of Tuesday morning due to the rains and the associated rising water from the Eno River.
Officials are encouraging residents and visitors to heed closing signs and barricades “for your safety, the safety of emergency crews and for the preservation of time and resources needed for other issues during this flooding event.”
The heavy rain has also caused the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for portions of Chatham County near the Haw River. The warning is specific to portions of the river near Bynum.
Weather service officials say the river was at 11.9′ as of eight o’clock Tuesday morning, while the flood stage for the river is 11′. Forecasters expect the river to rise to above 13′ by Tuesday evening before falling back below the flood stage on Wednesday afternoon. Officials added that even if the river reached 15′, flooding would be “confined to extensive stretches of woods and pastureland along the river.”
The flood warning is in effect until late Wednesday night, unless conditions call for its cancellation at an earlier time.
