All good things must come to an end.
The fifth-ranked UNC baseball team was reminded of that fact Sunday afternoon, as the NC State Wolfpack ended the Tar Heels’ 11-game win streak with a 4-2 victory at Boshamer Stadium.
Freshman Austin Bergner made his second career start on the mound for UNC (29-7, 14-4 ACC)–which has struggled to find a consistent arm on Sundays.
NC State (20-17, 8-10 ACC) broke through against Bergner with a solo home run from Brock Deatherage in the top of the third inning, before adding another run in the fourth–and two more in the fifth.
With UNC trailing 4-0 in the home half of the fifth, junior centerfielder Brian Miller split the Tar Heel deficit with a two-run single against Wolfpack starter Michael Bienlien–a play that came with no outs.
The visitors then turned to reliever Johnny Piedmonte, who held the red-hot Tar Heel offense without a run over the next five innings.
Closer Josh Hiatt pitched a career-long 4.2 innings of relief for UNC, while also keeping the Wolfpack from adding to their lead.
Without the big-time hitting that became a staple of the team’s winning streak, the Tar Heels fell flat while posting their lowest scoring total since their last loss–a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Miami back on March 26.
