A UNC professor and physician who formerly presided over the American Heart Association has earned a distinguished award from the American College of Cardiology.
Dr. Sidney C. Smith Jr. was selected to receive the prodigious title of Master of the American College of Cardiology, which is granted to no more than four exemplary fellows each year.
According to Dr. Richard Chazal, the president of the college, that title is befitting of Smith, who also served as the president of the World Heart Federation.
“Dr. Smith’s invaluable contributions to the field of cardiovascular medicine show unparalleled dedication to excellence and boundless commitment to improving patient care,” he explained.
The college is a nonprofit medical association that partnered with the American Heart Association in 2000 to develop national data standards for cardiovascular conditions.
Smith and other fellows are scheduled to receive their awards at a convocation ceremony to be held during the college’s 66th Annual Scientific Session in Washington, DC on Sunday.
