UNC has announced a contract extension through the 2019-2020 season for Men’s Basketball Head Coach Roy Williams.
Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham says Carolina is “certainly pleased to extend Coach Williams’ contract for two years beyond what was already in place” in a released statement.
Williams has said he wanted to coach another six to 10 years in the past and that this contract “takes me right up to the edge of that, which is good.”
The extension comes after the NCAA handed down the Notice of Allegations to UNC earlier this month, in which the only time Williams was cited was to say that he had been interviewed as part of the process.
Williams is set to begin his 13th year coaching his alma mater this fall, his 28th as a collegiate head coach overall, with a team bringing back nearly every piece that went to the Sweet 16 in last year’s NCAA Tournament.
Williams’ base salary will range from just over $408,000 next year to nearly $600,000 in 2019-2020, with deferred compensation ranging from $1.55 million to $1.75 in the contract’s final year. The contract also designates a $40,000 annual expense account for the coach.
Built-in contract bonuses range from $75,000 for the men’s basketball team posting an annual Academic Progress Rate of 975 or higher, out of 1000, to a $250,000 bonus for winning a national championship.
Williams also has personal contracts with Nike, for apparel, and Learfield, for multi-media obligations.
Williams has led the Tar Heels program to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances over 12 years as head coach, including national titles in 2005 and 2009. Under Williams’ leadership, UNC has also won six Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season titles and two ACC Tournament crowns.
UNC also announced contract extensions for Women’s Tennis Coach Brian Kalbas and Women’s Lacrosse Coach Jenny Levy.
