No one was injured after an RV caught fire along I-40 in Orange County Tuesday morning.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said a 40-foot RV was towing a vehicle along the interstate but pulled onto the shoulder after “some type of mechanical issue” around 10:20 a.m.

The driver was able to detach the vehicle that was being towed; the RV then “burst into flames,” according to troopers.

Woods adjacent to the interstate then caught fire and “several acres” burned before being brought under control by local fire crews.

Authorities said no one was in the RV when it caught fire.

Portions of the eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed for several hours Tuesday but reopened around 2 p.m.

There is no word at this time as to what caused the RV to catch fire.
