A Chatham County man reported missing early Wednesday morning has been found dead.

The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office shared an update Wednesday afternoon saying their search for Thomas Kelly ended with his body being found. He was 88 years old.

The office’s release said the circumstances of Kelly’s death do not appear to be suspicious nor is any foul play suspected. His death was confirmed by a medical examiner.

Authorities alerted the community earlier Wednesday morning after Kelly’s wife reported him missing. The sheriff’s office said she awoke before 4 a.m., found him missing and called 911 out of concern. Kelly was described as an early riser who often walks the area around the Governors Club neighborhood in Chapel Hill, where authorities said earlier they were searching.

“Our hearts go out to the Kelly family, including his wife and loved ones, friends and neighbors who will undoubtedly miss his presence, especially this time of year,” said Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson in a release. “It is a heartbreaking outcome for all involved.”

First responders and staff members from the sheriff’s office, North Chatham Fire Department, Chatham County Emergency Management, Lee County Emergency Services, Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Wake County Rescue Extrication & Delivery Specialist Team contributed to Wednesday’s search.

“We would like to express our sincere thanks to the first responders and specialized units who reported to the scene, as well as members of the public and media who helped spread the word and aid with the search,” Roberson says. “It was a true community effort in a time of need.”
