A Chapel Hill resident and registered sex offender was arrested by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for failing to register a new online ID.
Brian Antonio Franco, 29, was arrested at his home at 533 Dalton Drive in Chapel Hill on August 7 following a residence check from the NC Department of Adult Corrections. He was charged with felony failure to register new online identifiers after officers found two devices, one of which had an unregistered online account.
North Carolina General Statute § 14-208.9A. “Verification of registration information” outlines information registered sex offenders must reverify every six months, including online IDs.
“Whether the person still uses or intends to use any online identifiers last reported to the sheriff,” the statute reads. “If the person has any new or different online identifiers, then the person shall provide those online identifiers to the sheriff.”
Franco was previously arrested by the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office in February 2022 on charges of violating a domestic violence protection order and stalking. For the latest charges, he was issued a $25,000 secured bond and will appear at the Chatham County Justice Center on August 31.
