UNC Police have identified the suspect in the “detonation of a small device” at McCorkle Place on the Chapel Hill campus as 24-year-old Joshua Daniel Edwards.

The fire was started at the famous Davie Poplar tree near the Old Well.

Police say that a “potential charge” is listed as arson but that other charges may be filed.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall told WRAL that the suspect was taken to a local hospital for mental evaluation.

A UNC professor was burned attempting to stamp out the fire when there was a small burst of flames.

UNC Police then alerted Carrboro authorities to the potential of more dangerous material located in a car parked in the town. The Durham County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called to the scene to assist Carrboro Police in the investigation. The vehicle in question was breached Thursday evening and the all clear was given shortly before 8 p.m.
